“EMBODI” stands for Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence. As a national organization Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is reaching out to young African American males, ages 13 through 18, to help them “embody” or personify the attributes that are critical to achieving productive and successful manhood in today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving society.
This program was created out of an urgent sense that bold action is needed to save young males from the perils of academic failure, low self-esteem and crippled futures. One only has to browse the daily news headlines to recognize the need for programs like EMBODI.
EMBODI focuses on workshops and activities that assist young men in reaching their fullest potential educationally, socially and emotionally. Our program is designed around themes such as: self-esteem, physical health/wellnees, technology, leadership, community service, non-traditional careers and much more. Many of our sessions are led by male community leaders and business professionals who serve as role models to EMBODI participants.
Young men who benefit most from EMBODI enter the program possessing one or more of the following characteristics. They are:
- Full of potential, but have limited opportunity to achieve success
- Interested in developing leadership skills
- Interested in video games, computers and technology
- Inspired by learning new things
- Intrigued by mathematics, science and technology and/or careers that are considered off the beaten path — or non-traditional.
NDSA sets high standards for its EMBODI program and its participants. In each program cycle we are challenging young African American males to cultivate a personal long-term vision for their lives — to look beyond their daily circumstances and immediate surroundings and toward possibilities and bright futures. NDSA provides tools that can be used to attain a higher quality life. We aim to create community-minded individuals by actively involving them in the mechanics of service to others and exposing them to community service opportunities.
During each EMBODI session participants learn and practice behaviors that will support strong character. These include the principles of respecting each other’s privacy and rights to differing opinions, listening without interruption, trust, honesty, being positive, timeliness, and forgoing of negative behaviors such bullying, teasing, prying and illegal activities or those that do not meet the standards of the EMBODI program.
NDSA, with the endorsement of our national organization, is serious about helping young people gain, at least, the opportunity for productive and successful lives. We are open to hearing from parents and/or young men who are ready to step up and embrace their potential futures. Our sorority has a long legacy of reaching out and serving our communities. Our greatest joy is derived from our involvement in transforming young minds and lives.
